First Boss
First boss experiences

Remember your first boss in a game? Some sure are more memorable than others. First you got to get through the tutorials. You press the right buttons, jump the right hurdles and feel pretty confident. Soon after, the first challenge awaits!

Devil May Cry 5 - Urizen

The player gets a feel of the game with how to fight the first boss. Devil May Cry 5’s first boss features a demon lord called Urizen sitting comfortably on his bloody throne. Nero feels weak while he pushes across the battle area, tries to attack him, but only hits his shinny protector orbit. The orbit fights back with area and targeted attacks. After taking too much damage, Nero realizes the demon boss is too powerful to defeat. The cutscene that follows will prompt Nero to come back later. This type of boss puts the player into his or her place. This tells you the game is going to be hard. You will probably die many times trying to push through the levels and the bosses.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Olga Gurlukovich

Metal Gear 2: Sons of Liberty is a stealth game with a crazy story. For the first boss encounter, Snake sneaks up on Olga on the deck of the tanker at night. While listening to her radio conversation, the player finds out she chooses not to leave her unit when her father sends a chopper to take her away. Although her father wants to protect her and her unborn child out of concern, Olga has stronger will to stay and fight. Snake holds her at (tranquilizer) gun point and orders her to toss away her weapons overboard. Olga, being the badass soldier she is, surprises Snake with a knife and gun trick shot. Snake impressively dodges the shot, then Olga regains control and showers Snake with (real) bullets and grenades! She also cleverly uses her environment to shield herself. A tarp in the wind can do wonders to one’s visibility. Snake can even the odds as well by shooting out the search lights. Once Snake finally puts her to sleep, he claims her hand gun. Olga plays a bigger role later in this game, you will see her again for sure.

Final Fantasy VIII - Ifrit

Final Fantasy VIII's first boss is a field mission test. Squall and Quistis must venture into a fiery cave to subdue the Guardian Force Ifrit. Preparation is optional but preferred. Squall gets to bring his own two guardian forces along and draw ice type magic spells from the enemies near water. At the entrance of the cave, Squall can select a time limit. If you are not so confident, you can choose a longer time limit. All ready? Then, into the cave! Inside, Squall and Quistis will travel through a lava cave that’s surprisingly volcanic. Enemies are all fire types; fighting them uses up the time. You will want to push through with haste. At this point, the timer and the unknown destination create a sense of urgency. Will I have enough time for the Ifrit fight? When you get to the boss fight, Ifrit is impressively imposing. He makes you feel you are intruding. With your own ice type magic and Shiva helping, Ifrit finally yields. After you defeat Ifrit, he agrees to be your Guardian Force and help you. Based on your performance, you will receive feedback from your partner and instructor Quistis. The more challenging the time limit, the higher the score in the end. Welcome to the team, Ifrit!

These three first bosses made me excited! They are challenging and full of personality. They made me look forward to what the rest of the games bring. Bring on the boss fights!
